The Germans slowly bled troops and by February 1943, they were out of food and ammunition and surrendered. ![]() Close combat and deadly skirmishes over tiny pieces of territory raged on for months, as starving citizens and troops struggled to survive the brutal Russian winter. After about three months the Germans reached the shores of the Volga River, but the Russians mounted a counteroffensive that trapped the German army in the city. The strapped Russian army enlisted volunteer citizens, some with no weapons, to fight against the invaders. ![]() In August 1942, Adolf Hitler bombarded the industrial city (now known as Volgograd) with air assaults and then poured infantry into the attack.
